Spanish Almond Growers

OUR DEDICATION TO SOURCING ONLY THE BEST NUTS led us to old-world varieties of Organic Almonds grown in Spain.  Since 2006, we have worked with an organization there that supports small-scale Spanish almond growers.  Its goal is to ensure sustainability for grower families and communities whose main source of income is the land on which they live and farm.

Almond cultivation in Spain has traditionally been a dry farming method using rain water without irrigation.  This requires special work to retain soil moisture and prevent evaporation around the roots of almond trees.  Crops become deeply rooted in search of water and obtain the characteristics of the land or terrain, known in the wine world as “terroir” – the characteristics of the land that transfer to the crop. Dry farming allows almonds to develop much more flavour; these traditional ways of farming place quality before quantity.

Traditional almond harvesting was accomplished by using long wooden poles; now harvesting is carried out by trunk shakers and catchers.

Organic almonds are among the most nutritionally dense foods, rich in fibre and, like our Organic Almond Butter, an excellent source of vitamin E, magnesium, protein, potassium, calcium, phosphorous and iron.
